The downtown historic district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Buildings within the district include American Gothic, to Classical, High Victorian, American Four-Square and Second Empire and Greek Revival, some of the churches, commercial buildings, and residences reflect the eclecticism of the Victorian Era.
Hinton has a distinction for its many churches and homes with large front porches with various types of columns and gingerbread trim.
Bellepoint Park is located just downriver from Bluestone Dam on the east side of New River. Various recreational activities can be enjoyed at this location. It is the site of Hinton Little League Baseball Park. Tennis and basketball courts are located there. The park has a picnic shelter, restrooms, access to New River for fishing and plenty of parking.
Once construction projects are completed at Bluestone Dam, walking trails will be re-opened. Access to the park is off WV Rt. 3, turn onto Miller Avenue. The park is at the end of Miller Avenue.
City Side-Track Park is on Front Street in Hinton between 4th and 5th Avenues. To get there, turn right off Summers Street (Rt. 20 S) on to 4th Avenue, go one block and turn right, parking is in front of the building. If traveling North, turn left onto 4th Avenue from Temple Street (Rt. 20 N), go 2 blocks and turn right.
During the summer months, you can ride WILDWATER EXPRESS waterslide. It is over 40 ft high and has an over 200-feet slide into the splashdown pool. You can also enjoy volleyball, a gazebo and picnic areas.
Bellepoint Landing is one of the first phases of Hinton's Riverwalk. Bellepoint Landing is at the junction of the New River and Greenbrier River bridges at Bellepoint (the intersection of Rts. 3 & 107)
The Landing provides access for fishing both the New and Greenbrier Rivers. You can also enjoy a nice picnic along the banks of two of the areas three rivers. It is a
day-use park.
Hinton is the GATEWAY To The New River Gorge National River and is at its Southern boundary. The Sandstone Visitors Center is located 10 miles North of Hinton, just off I-64. The center is part of New River Gorge National River.
Sandstone Falls is within the New River Gorge National River. It can be viewed from an overlook on Rt. 20 between I-64 and Hinton. One can also visit, up-close by travelling into Hinton on Rt. 20, then turning toward Madams Creek and onto Rt. 26 (River Road) which runs parallel to New River across from Hinton. The trip down River Road is approximately 7 miles. There you will find a boardwalk where you can walk out over the river to view the falls. The dramatic rescue scene from a recent Lassie feature-length movie was filmed there.
Bluestone Wildlife Management Area is located South and East of Bluestone Lake. It consists of 17,632 acres, the 1,815-acre lake, 330 primitive campsites, fishing, hunting, picnicking, hiking trails. Boat rental, game courts and horseback riding are nearby. Open year round. Telephone: 304-466-3398;
At 423 Ballengee Street in Hinton, you will find the Veterans Museum of Southern West Virginia. Veterans and families from throughout the area have graciously supplied items to be placed on display here. You will find interesting and patriotic exhibits from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and World Wars I & II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Gulf War. The museum is open on Friday and Saturday.
The Hinton Railroad Museum is located at 206 Temple Street at the Hinton Visitors Center. In it, you will find a vast display of railroad artifacts gleaned from the workers and families that made Hinton an integral part of railroad history. View a part of this great nation's history with collections from the early days of the C&O Railway, including tools used by John Henry, the steel drivin' man. Also see the magnificent John Henry woodcarving exhibit on display. The museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Call 304 466-5420
The Campbell-Flannagan-Murrell House Museum is located at 422 Summer Street.
This historic home, built in 1875, is Hinton's oldest standing residential structure, and visitors will find that little has changed since that time..The home is host to Mountain River Artisans. It is open Saturday and Sunday.
East of Hinton, on Rt. 3 East at Lowell, WV between Talcott & Pence Springs you will find The Graham House. This historic log home, built in 1770, represents West Virginia's oldest standing home and was built while our nation was still under English rule. Step back in time as costumed guides take you on a tour throughout the structure, filled with period pieces and original furnishings. Site of one of the last known Indian attacks in West Virginia.
This Museum is a gem to see. Located on the grounds of the Graham House, it is a replica of an authentic one-room school house. It is filled with artifacts and memorabilia from an earlier time in our history. Charles Saunders, a former Summers County Schools Superintendent, was the driving force behind erection of this wonderful museum.
When you visit this museum, which specializes in wildlife and Indian artifacts, you will find a large collection of life-sized animals including polar, grizzly, and black-bear, as well as moose, caribou, sheep and goats, deer artifacts, Indian arrowheads, rocks and fossils found in West Virginia. Bluestone Museum also provides taxidermy services. It is located on WV Rt. 20 across the river from downtown Hinton.
East of Hinton, along State Rt. 3, at Talcott, you will find the Big Bend Tunnel of the old C&O Railroad. This is where the legend of John Henry was born. John Henry Park is in the planning stages and the Statue of John Henry atop Big Bend Tunnel will be moved within the park grounds once development begins. The annual John Henry Days Festival is held in Talcott early each July.
Hinton has many fine antique shops. Find antiques of all types, many unique to the area.
Hinton has a rich array of arts to enjoy and purchase. Art by many local artists and artisans can been seen and purchased at various places around the community. Performing arts are developing around town and performances are also available in Pipestem Resort's Ampitheater.
